Can Bisacodyl Tablets be taken with other stomach medicines, such as antacids?

Bisacodyl Tablets should not be taken at the same time as certain medicines, such as antacids. Certain medications will alter the pH of the stomach, and this lower acidity will stop Bisacodyl from working. Do not take this medication with dairy products, such as milk, cheese, or yogurt, or with medicines like antacids or proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) such as omeprazole or pantoprazole. It is recommended to leave 1-2 hours between these medicines and Bisacodyl Tablets.

Who can use Bisacodyl Tablets?

Pregnant The use of this medicine can be used during pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. There is no human data available to properly assess the risk of Bisacodyl use during pregnancy. The risk of fetal harm is not expected due to the drug’s minimal systemic absorption.

Breastfeeding The use of this medicine can be used during breastfeeding if the benefits outweigh the risks. There is no human data available to properly assess the risk of Bisacodyl while nursing. Bisacodyl does not pass into milk. The risk of infant harm is not expected due to the drug’s minimal systemic absorption by the woman. Adverse effects on milk production are also not expected.

Children Though Bisacodyl Tablets are not typically the first-line treatment for constipation in pediatric patients, it is considered safe for most children over 12 years old. Certain forms of Bisacodyl may be given to children younger than 12, but it should only be used under the guidance of a doctor or pharmacist.

Geriatric Bisacodyl is considered safe for this population, but the chronic use of laxatives such as Bisacodyl may cause dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, muscle weakness, and kidney issues. Fluid loss can be dangerous for some elderly patients, so it is advised to use this medicine under the guidance of a medical professional.

Some drugs that are known to interact include certain bowel prep formulas (polyethylene glycol, sodium phosphate, sulfate), sodium picosulfate, aluminum hydroxide, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, magnesium citrate, magnesium hydroxide, sodium zirconium cyclosilicate, trofinetide, cimetidine, dexlansoprazole, esomeprazole, famotidine, and pantoprazole.

As dizziness and fainting are side effects of bisacodyl, it is advised to not drive or operate machinery until it is clear how this medication affects you.

Some formulations of this medicine may contain benzyl alcohol.

Bisacodyl Tablets are not recommended for young children who are unable to swallow tablets.

Oral Bisacodyl Is Effective and Well-Tolerated in Patients With Chronic Constipation

This study included an examination of the efficacy and safety of 4 weeks of treatment with oral bisacodyl tablets in patients with chronic constipation.

It is a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group study conducted in 27 centers in the United Kingdom. Patients were separated into groups that were given 10mg bisacodyl (247 patients) or placebo (121 patients), once daily, for 4 weeks. Electronic diary each day helped them to record information relating to their constipation.

The mean (± standard error of the mean [SEM]) number of complete spontaneous bowel movements (CSBMs) per week during the treatment period increased from 1.1 ± 0.1 in both groups to 5.2 ± 0.3 in the bisacodyl group and 1.9 ± 0.3 in the placebo group (P < .0001). Parameters like the number of complete spontaneous bowel movements for every single week, number of spontaneous bowel movements (SBMs), and constipation-associated symptoms) showed improvements and bisacodyl efficacy (P < .0001).

The overall Patient Assessment of Constipation quality of life (PAC-QOL) score and all subscales (satisfaction, physical discomfort, psychosocial discomfort, worries, and concerns) were better in the bisacodyl-treated patients, compared with those that received placebo (P ≤ .0070).

The conclusion is that bisacodyl is an effective and well-tolerated treatment for patients with chronic constipation. This drug improves bowel function, constipation-related symptoms, and disease-related QOL.
