What is Emulsifying Ointment?

Therapeutic Class:

Active Ingredients: Emulsifying Wax, White Soft Paraffin, Liquid Paraffin

Emulsifying Ointment is a topical treatment for dry skin conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis. It is used to smooth and soften the skin and helps to relieve symptoms like cracked, scaly, and itchy skin. This topical ointment can also be used instead of soap. Emulsifying Ointment is safe for daily usage.

This ointment contains a combination of paraffin oils. The active ingredients cover the skin with a thin layer of oil which prevents moisture from evaporating. Emulsifying ointments are sometimes called emollients or moisturizers. The emollients are the liquid and soft paraffin and in combination with the emulsifying wax, they create a stable cream.

This product improves the skin barrier function and creates a stable emulsion that delivers active ingredients to the skin surface while also preventing transepidermal water loss. It can also protect the skin from irritants and pathogens. Emulsifying Ointment prevents moisture loss and maintains optimal hydration by forming a thin film on the skin surface. It traps moisture and prevents evaporation. This product also fills the gaps between the skin cells and smooths rough patches which improves the skin texture and appearance.

AdvaCare Pharma's Emulsifying Ointment is manufactured in GMP-certified facilities located in China, India, and the USA. We routinely inspect our production facilities to ensure our products meet health, safety, and environmental standards.

Randomized, Double-blind Study with Glycerol and Paraffin in Uremic Xerosis

Uremic xerosis is a disease that is poorly responsive to moisturizing and emollient therapy.

This is a randomized, double-blind, intraindividual, multicentric clinical study that was performed on 100 individuals with moderate to severe uremic xerosis for 7 days. During the study, the patients were treated twice daily with an emulsion combining glycerol and paraffin (test product) on one allocated lower leg, and the emulsion alone (comparator) on the other lower leg. The patients were treated in all of the xerotic areas for 49 days. There was an estimation of the response on each lower leg, as defined by a reduction from baseline of at least two grades in a five-point clinical score on day 7.

In total 99 patients were examined and the test product showed efficacy, resulting in a treatment response in 72 patients (73%), compared to 44 patients (44%) who responded to the comparator (P < 0.0001, between-group comparison). This effectiveness was due to the decrease in the density and thickness of scales by day 7 (P < 0.0001 compared to the comparator), and also the marked improvement in uremic pruritus (75%) and the patient's overall quality of life by the end of the study (P < 0.001, within-group analysis). The test product demonstrated good tolerance, with only five patients (5%) experiencing product-related local intolerance such as exacerbated pruritus, local burning, or erythema.

The conclusion of this research is that uremic xerosis can be managed successfully when an appropriate emollient therapy is used.
