Promethazine HCl Syrup is used to treat symptoms caused by allergic rhinitis and allergic conjunctivitis. This medication is also indicated for use as an antiemetic agent in the active and prophylactic treatment of motion sickness. When combined with other drugs, Promethazine may be used to treat anaphylaxis.

Promethazine HCl may also be prescribed as a sedative. It is also used to control nausea or vomiting associated with certain types of anesthesia or surgery.

Promethazine is classified in the family of medicines called phenothiazines. It is an H1-antagonist with anticholinergic, sedative, and antiemetic effects, and some local anesthetic properties. It works by preventing the release of histamine. Histamine is released when the body is exposed to certain allergies, such as pollen, chemicals, mold, dander, and drugs.

What is Promethazine used for?

It is used to treat conditions like:

How is Promethazine HCl Syrup used?

This medication is manufactured as a liquid to be taken orally. This medication can be taken with or without food.

What dose should be taken?

For the treatment of allergic conditions, the usual dose for adults is 6.25-25mg, taken three times a day (before meals and at bedtime). The maximum dosage is 100mg in a day.

For children over 2 years old, the usual dose is 0.1-0.5mg/kg, taken every 6 hours. The maximum dosage is 12.5mg per dose

Side Effects

Precautions

Do NOT use Promethazine HCl Syrup if:

You are allergic to promethazine or other phenothiazines.
You are hypersensitive to sulfites.
You have liver disease.
You have a history of seizures.
You have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
You have sleep apnea or other breathing disorder.
You have glaucoma.
You have problems with urination.
You have an adrenal gland tumor.
You have low levels of calcium in the blood.

Drug interactions may increase the risk of serious side effects or change how certain medications work.

Driving or operating machinery should be avoided, as the medication may cause sedation. Alcohol should be avoided, as it may worsen the adverse effects caused by Promethazine HCl.

Do not prescribe to patients under 2 years old, as there have been some reported fatalities due to respiratory depression. Use the lowest effective dose for patients over 2 years old.
