What is Albendazole?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Albendazole

Albendazole Boluses are an anthelmintic drug used to treat various parasitic infections, including nematodes, cestodes, and protozoa. It is indicated for the treatment and prevention of gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematodiasis, taeniasis, and chronic liver fluke of livestock like camels, cows, sheep, and goats.

Albendazole is classified under the drug category of benzimidazole anthelmintics, displaying a broad-spectrum action against various types of worms found in both domestic animals and humans, including roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes. The active ingredient operates by inhibiting tubulin polymerization, disrupting the worm's ability to utilize glucose, ultimately leading to immobilization and death.

This anthelmintic is employed in the treatment of nematodes and trematodes in domestic animals and offers limited efficacy against cestodes. Benzimidazoles, characterized by a wide safety margin, are known for their broad-spectrum activity against roundworms (nematodes).

Benzimidazoles are water-soluble and can be administered orally as a bolus, paste, or suspension. The extent of absorption in the gastrointestinal tract varies among different animal species and is influenced by factors such as formulation, dosage, solubility, and the esophageal groove reflex. The journey of anthelmintic drugs within the body involves absorption into the bloodstream, distribution to various organs, including the liver. Metabolic processes take place in the liver, and the drugs are eventually excreted from the body through feces and urine.

Given the diverse locations of parasites within the body, including the lumen and lungs, absorption from the gastrointestinal tract is crucial. Horses and ruminants stand to benefit significantly from Albendazole due to its slow passage through the cecum and rumen.

Albendazole is one of the most effective benzimidazoles because it has the longest half-life.This drug kills the worms, but eggs can survive a few weeks after treatment, so treatment may need to be repeated. Albendazole has no efficacy against external parasites.

It is important to note that Albendazole Boluses are for veterinary purposes only. This formulation is intended to be prescribed by a veterinary doctor or animal care specialist for an animal.

Uses

What is Albendazole used for?

It is used to treat infections caused by parasites such as:

  • Chabertia, Cooperia, Haemonchus, Nematodirus, Oesophagostomum, Ostertagia, Strongyloides, Trichostrongylus (gastrointestinal worms)
  • Cystocaulus, Dictyocaulus, Muellerius, Protostrongylus, Neo Strongylus (lungworms)
  • Moniezia (tapeworms)
  • Dicrocoelium, Fasciola hepatica (adult liver flukes, eggs)

What animals can be treated with Albendazole Boluses?

It is recommended for livestock animals like camels, cows, ѕhеер, and gоаtѕ.

How do Albendazole Boluses work against gastrointestinal nematode infections in cattle?

The dose for gastrointestinal nematode infections in cattle is based on the body weight of the cattle. Albendazole bolus can prevent nematode egg output almost completely for about 4 months. During the treatment, the pepsinogen concentration can decrease. Treated cattle have less contamination on the pasture with Trichostrongylid larvae, which leads to a cleaner environment after treatment with Albendazole boluses. Treated animals have increased weight gain than untreated animals. The average body weight difference between treated and untreated cattle is 10.7kg.

How do Albendazole Boluses work against Haemonchus in lambs?

Lambs positive for Haemonchus should be treated with Albendazole boluses. According to the in vivo fecal egg count reduction test and controlled anthelmintic efficacy test, this drug has been shown to be effective. Albendazole has a 100% efficacy against Haemonchus contortus if dosed as suggested by the manufacturer.

Does food affect Albendazole absorption?

In pigs, addition of soybean oil to the pelleted food leads to enhanced and delayed absorption, which leads to higher systemic exposure for up to 48 hours post-treatment. To achieve the best effect, prolongation of contact time is recommended. More frequent oral administration of a total dose at 12-hour intervals and extending the exposure period with more-soluble drugs bring better results even against benzimidazole-resistant worms. Animals should have reduced feed intake to reduce the flow rate of the drug.

How should Albendazole Boluses be stored?

They should be stored in a dark, dry location below 25°C. Keep the boluses in the blister packs until usage.

Is there a withdrawal period after treatment with Albendazole?

The withdrawal time is 12 days for meat and 4 days for milk.

Dosage

How much Albendazole should be given to cattle or camels?

  • 3 boluses of 300mg per 100kg of body weight
  • 1 bolus of 2500mg per 300kg of body weight

The dosage depends on the animal’s current health condition. The veterinarian should examine the animal before determining the dose. The dose also depends on the age and body weight of the animal.

Refer to a veterinary doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.

Side Effects

When given at the recommended dosage, there have been few reported side effects caused by the use of Albendazole Boluses. Some side effects may include but are not limited to appetite change and lethargy.

Serious side effects may include:

  • allergy or hypersensitivity reactions
  • seizures
  • signs of a neurological problem (such as head pressing)
  • liver toxicity or bone marrow damage in small animals

In mice, sheep, and rabbits, Albendazole shows teratogenic effects. Pregnant and lactating animals should not consume Albendazole.

Other side effects include nausea, vomiting, or dizziness. But the report of the side effects is minimal.

For a comprehensive list of all possible side effects of this medication, consult a licensed veterinarian.

Precautions

Do NOT use Albendazole Boluses for an animal that:

  • has a known allergy or hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
  • is in the first trimester of pregnancy.
  • has liver disease.
  • has a disorder or disease that affects the blood.

Treatment with this drug should be administered with caution for an animal that:

  • is pregnant or lactating.
  • is an alpaca, dove, or pigeon.

There are known interactions between Albendazole and other drugs, including cimetidine, dexamethasone, and praziquantel.

Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling this product. Pregnant women should not handle Albendazole products, as it can be absorbed through direct skin contact.

Regular usage of anthelmintics for parasitic infections in ruminants and other animals can lead to drug resistance. Frequent use of the same anthelmintic drug leads to negative side effects. Consult with a veterinarian if you are thinking about changing the anthelmintic drug. The use of anthelmintics in suboptimal doses can lead to drug resistance. Prophylactic mass treatment can also lead to resistance and the drug becomes ineffective. This drug is mostly given when animals are affected by a particular disease.

Accidental overdosing should be managed as soon as possible. Follow the recommended dosage from the veterinarian. If you miss a dose, do not give two doses at once. Overdosing can affect the nervous, cardiovascular, and gastrointestinal systems.

Keep good hygiene practices when giving this medicine. This will prevent parasites from spreading around the animal’s environment. Once cured, animals can get infected again if their environment is infested with parasites from bad environmental hygiene. Animals should be kept on dry lot for 12 to 24 hours after deworming. This is to ensure that eggs and larvae are not deposited in the pasture and animals do not get infected again.

What are the most common animals Albendazole Boluses are used for?

Albendazole Bolus is primarily used for treating nematode and trematode infections in domestic animals. The specific animal species and common uses of Albendazole Boluses can include:

Cattle Parasites

Albendazole Boluses are administered to control and prevent gastrointestinal worm infestations in cattle. This includes common parasites such as roundworms, tapeworms, and flukes. Albendazole is extremely powerful against trichostrongylid larvae in cattle. In cattle, Albendazole is effective for preventing cyst excretion in Giardia-infected animals. Dictyocaulus, Fasciola hepatica, and Moniezia can be suppressed with Albendazole.

Small Ruminant Parasites

Similar to cattle, Albendazole Boluses are used in sheep to manage and prevent gastrointestinal parasites, including roundworms and tapeworms. Albendazole Boluses control and prevent gastrointestinal worm infestations in goats. This includes parasites such as Haemonchus contortus and other nematodes.

Swine (Pig) Parasites

Swine may suffer from gastrointestinal worm infestations, and Albendazole Boluses are used for the management of these parasites.

Horses Parasites

Albendazole is commonly used in horses in various formulations, including paste and granules, but boluses can control internal parasites such as strongyles, tapeworms, and pinworms.

Dogs and Cats Intestinal Worms

Albendazole Boluses are not typically used in dogs and cats, but Albendazole is commonly administered in other forms to control intestinal worms.

Poultry Parasites

Albendazole Boluses can be used to control and manage gastrointestinal worm infestations in poultry. This includes worms such as roundworms and tapeworms that affect the digestive system.

Albendazole Boluses dosage should be done under the guidance of a veterinarian. The veterinarian should determine the appropriate dosage, frequency, and duration of treatment based on the current health status of the animals and the type of parasites.

*Regulatory compliance may vary according to production standard, import requirements and/or manufacturing origin.
