Penicillin G Procaine for Injection is a long-acting antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections in animals such as camels, cats, cows, dogs, goats, horses, sheep and pigs. This antibiotic is not effective against penicillinase-producing bacteria. Penicillin G Procaine for Injection is manufactured for reconstitution. It is intended to be administered intramuscularly.

Penicillin G procaine is the combination of the antibiotic benzylpenicillin and the local anesthetic agent procaine. Penicillin works by inhibiting cell wall formation.

Penicillin G procaine is also known by the names procaine benzylpenicillin and procaine G penicillin.

This drug has been manufactured as a powder for reconstitution. This medicine can be administered by the intramuscular route. If doses are repeated, the site of injection should change each time.

How should Penicillin G Procaine for Injection be stored?

This medication should be stored in a dark, dry location under 25°C.

What are the withdrawal times for Penicillin G Procaine?

The withdrawal time is 5 days for slaughter. For milk, the withdrawal time is 72 hours.

Dosage

How much Penicillin G Procaine to give to cattle?

The usual dose is 25,000U/kg, given once per day IM. Do not continue treatment longer than 4 days. For bovine respiratory disease complex, 66,000 U/kg, given once per day IM/SC.

How much Penicillin G Procaine to give to pigs?

The usual dose is 40,000 U/kg, given once per day IM.

How much Penicillin G Procaine to give to dogs?

For infections, the usual dose is 20,000-40,000 Units/kg, given every 12-24 hours IM/SC.

How much Penicillin G Procaine to give to cats?

For soft tissue infections, the usual dose is 20,000 Units/kg, given every 12 hours IM/SC. For bone/joint infections, the usual dose is 20,000-40,000 Units/kg, given every 8 hours IM.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Penicillin G Procaine for Injection.

Common side effects include but are not limited to:

  • gastrointestinal effects (diarrhea, loss of appetite)
  • pain at the injection site

Serious side effects may include:

  • allergic reaction and anaphylaxis
  • severe loss of appetite in cats

In the event of a serious allergic reaction, Epinephrine (Adrenaline) 1:1000 should be administered immediately.

Precautions

Do NOT use Penicillin G Procaine for Injection for an animal that: • has a known allergy or hypersensitivity to penicillin.

Treatment with this drug should be administered with caution if an animal:

  • is hypersensitive to other beta-lactam antibiotics such as cephalosporin.
  • has an electrolyte disorder.
  • belongs to the following species: snakes, rabbits, guinea pigs, gerbils, hamsters, or chinchillas.
  • is pregnant or lactating.

This medication should not be administered into the vein.
