What is the mechanism of common Corticosteroids?

Corticosteroids exert their effects through a complex mechanism of action that involves binding to specific receptors in cells throughout the body. When corticosteroid medicines are administered, they diffuse across cell membranes and bind to intracellular receptors. This binding activates a cascade of molecular events that ultimately leads to the suppression of the immune system and the reduction of inflammation.

Glucocorticoids

They work by binding to glucocorticoid receptors in the cytoplasm of cells, causing a decrease in the production of cytokines and chemokines, which are involved in inflammation and immune responses.

Mineralocorticoids are primarily used to treat conditions associated with excessive loss of sodium and water, such as Addison's disease: a condition in which the adrenal glands do not produce enough cortisol and aldosterone; salt-wasting congenital adrenal hyperplasia: a genetic disorder that affects the adrenal glands and leads to excessive loss of sodium and water; and orthostatic hypotension: a condition in which blood pressure drops upon standing, leading to dizziness or fainting.

Potential side effects of mineralocorticoid corticosteroid medicines include high blood pressure, fluid retention, and electrolyte imbalances. Close monitoring and dose adjustments may be necessary to minimize the risk of these side effects.
