What is Artesunate?

Therapeutic Class:

Active Ingredients: Artesunate

Artesunate for Injection is an antimalarial drug used for the treatment of uncomplicated cases of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum. Artesunate is generally well tolerated by patients and is a first-line treatment option for adults and children. This drug is not used for the prevention of malaria.

Artesunate has also been shown to have anti-cancer activity in the treatment of leukemia.

Artesunate is a water-soluble hemisuccinate derivative of dihydroartemisinin. It is one of the few artemisinin derivatives that is water soluble. It works by a combination of actions, including interfering with the heme group and increasing ROS (reactive oxygen species) and free radicals.

Artesunate for Injection is produced and exported as a combination kit with two diluents: 5% Sodium Bicarbonate and 0.9% Sodium Chloride. Sodium Bicarbonate helps improve the tolerability and safety of the medication, as it helps raise the pH of the reconstituted Artesunate. Sodium Chloride is a sterile solution in which the Artesunate can be dissolved, which also helps deliver electrolytes and fluids to the patient.

For adults and children, the usual dose is 2.4mg of Artesunate per kg of body weight, by slow intravenous (IV) or deep intramuscular (IM) injection. Administer at 0, 12 and 24 hours, and then once daily until oral treatment can be substituted.

Artesunate Injection should be administered for a minimum of 24 hours (3 doses), regardless of the patient's ability to tolerate oral medication earlier.
