What are Fenbendazole + Praziquantel?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Fenbendazole, Praziquantel

Fenbendazole + Praziquantel Tablets are a broad-spectrum dewormer drug used to treat or control gastrointestinal roundworms and tapeworms. It is typically used to treat dogs and cats, but may be used for other animals. This combination is an effective treatment for a wide range of parasites.

This combination contains two active ingredients: Fenbendazole and Praziquantel. The combination shows nematicidal activity and is also active against imaginal and larval stages of parasites.

Fenbendazole is classified as a benzimidazole carbamate. It shows a broad spectrum of activity against both mature and immature nematodes and cestodes. Fenbendazole works by inhibiting glucose uptake. This drains a parasite's glycogen reserves, which leads to its death. Fenbendazole produces an ovicidal effect. It is also noted that this drug has a wide safety margin. Among benzimidazoles, it has the longest half-life, ensuring effective plasma and gut concentrations over an extended period. This prolonged presence enhances its efficacy against immature, arrested larvae, and adult nematodes. Its efficacy is significant in ruminants due to slow passage through the rumen. Administering the drug at intervals of 12 hours increases contact time and improves bioavailability, enhancing its effectiveness. Metabolites are primarily eliminated through the biliary pathway with enterohepatic recycling.

Praziquantel is a pyrazine isoquinoline derivative. This compound causes severe damage to the parasites integument, which results in the contraction and paralysis of the parasites. Praziquantel is effective against trematodes and tapeworms, including Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina, Uncinaria stenocephala, Ancylostoma caninum, and Trichuris vulpis. It is also effective against cestodes, including Dipylidium caninum, Taenia, and Echinococcus granulosus. This medication disrupts parasites' energy metabolism by lowering their ability to generate energy through phosphorylation. Following oral administration, it is absorbed slowly and incompletely from the gastrointestinal tract. It distributes throughout the body, achieving therapeutic concentrations at infection sites. The drug is primarily excreted via bile into feces, with minimal amounts excreted in urine.
