What is Fipronil?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Fipronil

Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray is a ready-to-use antiparasitic treatment used to treat and control external parasite infestations on dogs and cats. It is effective against all life stages of ticks, fleas, and lice. Topical Fipronil provides up to 3 months of protection against fleas and 1 month for ticks.

Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray is safe to use for young, pregnant, or lactating animals. This product is intended for veterinary use only.

Fipronil is classified as a phenylpyrazole with insecticidal and acaricidal action. It works by affecting the nervous system of the parasite. It binds to and blocks the GABA-gated chloride channels and glutamate-gated chloride (GluCl) channels in the nerve cells of insects. This blockage inhibits the transmission of nerve impulses, leading to hyperexcitation of the parasite's nervous system, paralysis, and ultimately death.

Unlike organophosphates or carbamates, Fipronil is not a cholinesterase inhibitor, making it a different class of insecticide. This mode of action is highly effective against pests like fleas and ticks but is relatively safe for mammals, including dogs and cats, due to their lower affinity for mammalian GABA receptors and higher body mass.

Fipronil also exhibits a "cascade effect" on fleas and ticks. After being applied to the skin of an animal, it spreads via the oil glands and hair, covering the entire body surface. This action ensures prolonged external protection. Residual activity and persistence of Fipronil on the skin and coat of dogs and cats provide long-lasting efficacy.

The drug is minimally absorbed systemically, primarily acting at the site of application. It's effective against a wide range of ectoparasites and is particularly valued for its persistent killing activity even after exposure to sunlight, water, or other environmental elements.

AdvaCare Pharma is a trusted producer and exporter of Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray. This GMP-certified product is manufactured in facilities in China, India, and the USA.

Uses

What is Fipronil used for?

It's used to control external parasites, such as fleas and ticks.

What animals can be treated with Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray?

It's recommended for companion animals like dogs and cats.

How is Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray used?

This medication has been manufactured as an aqueous solution, which is intended to be administered topically. Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray should be shaken well before use. It can be sprayed directly onto the animal's coat. Do not towel dry or rinse. Animals should not be given a bath for 48 hours following the treatment.

How long does Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray remain effective after application?

The duration of effectiveness can vary, but typically, Fipronil remains active against fleas and ticks for up to a month after application. This may be influenced by factors such as the animal's coat type, bathing frequency, and environmental conditions.

Is Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray safe to use around other pets and children?

When used as directed, this drug is generally safe around other pets and children. Ensure that the treated animal dries completely before allowing interaction, and to prevent children from ingesting or coming into direct contact with the wet solution.

Can Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray be used on other animals besides dogs and cats?

Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray is specifically formulated for dogs and cats. It should not be used on other animals unless directed by a veterinarian, as different species may react differently to the active ingredients.

What are the signs that Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray is working?

The signs of efficacy include a reduction or absence of scratching, biting, and visible fleas or ticks on the pet. Dead fleas and ticks may be seen in the pet's bedding or resting areas as the product takes effect.

Is Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray effective against all stages of fleas and ticks?

Fipronil is primarily effective against adult fleas and ticks. It may not be effective against immature stages like eggs and larvae. For comprehensive parasite control, additional measures or products might be necessary.

How soon after application can pets interact with other animals?

Pets should be kept isolated until the Fipronil spray has completely dried on their coat, which can take a few hours. This precaution prevents the transfer of the product to other animals or surfaces.

Can Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray be used in conjunction with other flea and tick treatments?

While it can be part of a comprehensive tick and flea program, ask a veterinarian before combining it with other treatments to establish an effective and safe multi-modal approach to parasite control.

How should pets be handled after applying Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray?

After applying the medication, pets should not be touched or handled until the treatment area is completely dry. This helps to prevent the transfer of the product to humans or other surfaces and ensures maximum effectiveness. Pets should be prevented from grooming themselves or each other.

What should be done if Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray accidentally comes into contact with human skin or eyes?

If the spray contacts human skin, wash the area thoroughly with soap and water. In case of eye exposure, rinse the eyes with water for several minutes. Seek medical attention if irritation persists or if the product is ingested.

How should Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray be stored?

This medication should be stored in a dark, dry location below 30°C.

Dosage

How much Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray should be used?

The usual dose is 1-4ml per kg of body weight, which is approximately 10-12 sprays. Administer 2-3 times per day. Spray evenly across the body and allow the animal to dry.

How should the dosage be adjusted for small or young animals?

Typically, the lower end of the dosage range (1ml per kg of body weight) should be used. Always consult a veterinarian for the correct dosage for puppies, kittens, or small breeds.

What should be done if a dose of Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray is missed?

If a dose is missed, apply it as soon as you remember. If it's close to the time for the next scheduled dose, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.

Is the dosage frequency the same for all levels of infestation?

The usual frequency of Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray is 2-3 times per day, but this may vary depending on the severity of the infestation and the veterinarian's advice. In cases of severe infestation, more frequent application might be recommended initially.

Refer to a veterinary doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray. Most animals tolerate this drug well, but individual sensitivities can vary.

Adverse effects are not common when used at the recommended dosage. There have been some reported cases of gastrointestinal effects if ingested, especially if pets lick the treated area.

Serious side effects may include allergy or hypersensitivity reactions, which may manifest as skin irritation, excessive scratching, or more severe symptoms. In rare cases, neurological symptoms such as tremors or lethargy have been observed. If any severe reactions occur, immediate veterinary care should be sought.

For a comprehensive list of all possible side effects of this medication, consult a veterinarian.

Precautions

Do NOT use Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray for an animal that:

  • has a known allergy or hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
  • is a puppy younger than 8 weeks old.

Administer the product in a well-ventilated area, and thoroughly wash your hands after treatment. During application, avoid spraying directly on the animal's face or in their eyes or mouth. Use gloves to prevent skin contact, and apply the spray in a well-ventilated area to minimize inhalation by both the pet and the handler.

Fipronil is a flammable chemical. Do not smoke near the solution, and do not allow sprayed animals near a fire.

This drug is known to be highly toxic to bees, fish, and aquatic life. Prevent runoff into waterways and to dispose of empty containers properly to minimize environmental risks.

What are the most common animals Fipronil Flea&Tick Spray is used for?

Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray is primarily used for two types of animals:

  • Dogs: In dogs, Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray is applied directly to the animal's skin, usually between the shoulder blades or along the backline. Part the fur to ensure the spray reaches the skin. The dosage and frequency of application depend on the dog's size and the severity of the infestation. The spray acts by killing and repelling fleas and ticks, providing long-lasting protection.
  • Cats: When using Fipronil Flea & Tick Spray on cats, similar application methods are used as in dogs. The spray is applied to the skin, taking care to avoid the face and eyes. For cats, it's important to use the correct dosage and to ensure they do not ingest the product when grooming.
