What is Ivermectin?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Ivermectin

Ivermectin Pour-On Solution is a dewormer drug used to treat parasites in horses and livestock animals such as camels, cows, goats, and sheep. It is used in the treatment of gastrointestinal roundworms, eyeworms, horn flies, lice, mites, and grubs. Depending on the infection, it may be necessary to combine this external treatment with an internal dewormer.

Ivermectin belongs to the family of medicines called anthelmintics. This compound has been derived from avermectin. Ivermectin works by inhibiting the function of aspects of the nervous system within the parasite. This leads to its paralysis and then the death of the parasite.

Known as a 'wonder drug' it originates from a single microorganism isolated from Japanese soil and finds extensive use in both human and animal applications. Ivermectin is renowned for its efficacy in eliminating a broad spectrum of internal and external parasites in commercial livestock and companion animals, with recent utilization in human medicine.

Its mechanism of action involves causing neurological damage to specific parasites, leading to paralysis and eventual death. Presently, the FDA approves Ivermectin for heartworm prevention in dogs and as a topical treatment for ear mites in canines. The absorption of Ivermectin is influenced by factors such as the route of administration, formulation, and the species of the animal. Once in the bloodstream, the drug binds to albumins and lipoproteins, distributing throughout the entire organism. While some of the drug accumulates, a portion undergoes biotransformation in the liver and fat. The drug's excretion is gradual, with approximately 2% eliminated through urine and over 90% through bile and feces.

The therapeutic effects of Ivermectin in animals vary based on factors like breed, body condition, methods of quantification, and absorption.

This drug is also available in the form of injection, premix, oral solution, and tablet. The treatment choice depends on the choice of the veterinarian and the current health condition of the animal.

It is important to note that Ivermectin Pour-On Solution is for veterinary purposes. This product is intended for external use only.

Why is Ivermectin Pour-On Solution used in companion animals?

In companion animals like dogs and cats, it is used for treating Sarcoptes scabiei, Otodectes cynotis, Cheyletiella blakei, C. yasguri, and Demodex canis. Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Ivermectin Pour-On Solution.

Adverse reactions have not been well documented. Some serious side effects may include:

  • allergic reaction (skin rash, fever, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing)
  • swelling and pruritus in horses;
  • shock and neurotoxicity in dogs;
  • neurotoxicity in mice and rats.

In dogs with Demodex, be especially cautious because Ivermectin is not always recommended due to its ability to penetrate the blood-brain barrier and gene mutations might occur. Common symptoms associated with its use include central nervous system (CNS) depression, visual impairment, and ataxia. Side effects typically manifest when the dose is ten times higher than the prescribed amount.

Dog breeds most susceptible to gene mutations caused by Ivermectin include Shetland Sheepdogs, Collies, Old English Sheepdogs, Australian Shepherds, and other herding dogs. However, it's essential to note that side effects may not necessarily occur in these breeds. The decision to administer Ivermectin should be made by a veterinarian. Dogs with gene mutations producing P-glycoprotein may experience toxicosis even at therapeutic dosages for Demodicosis. Initial signs include mydriasis, ataxia, and tremors, progressing to collapse, coma, and respiratory failure at higher dosages.

For a comprehensive list of all possible side effects of this medication, consult a veterinarian.

Precautions

Do NOT use Ivermectin Pour-On Solution for an animal that:

  • has a known allergy or hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients.
  • is producing milk for human consumption.
  • non-lactating dairy cows that are within 60 days of calving.

Wear protective gloves and clothing while handling this product, and thoroughly wash your hands after application.

Ivermectin is toxic to fish and other aquatic life. Do not use it in ponds or other bodies of water. Dispose of any waste material according to local regulations.

Administration of this drug requires caution when dealing with an animal: • prone to the ABCB1-1∆ (MDR1-allele) mutation. Collie-type breeds of dogs, in particular, should undergo at least 8 hours of observation post-treatment. While this drug interacts with their multi-drug resistance gene, not every Collie or herding dog possesses this mutation if this is indeed the intended meaning.

Common symptoms of ivermectin toxicity include neurological signs. Interactions are known to occur between this medication and other drugs, including benzodiazepines, ketamine, spinosad, amiodarone, carvedilol, clarithromycin, cyclosporine, and ketoconazole.

Be aware that this drug may cause false-negative results in animals with occult heartworm infections.

This product is exclusively intended for animal use and should be administered by a veterinarian or as per the provided instructions.

Adhere to the dosage prescribed by the veterinarian to prevent potential side effects of overdosing. If accidental overdosing occurs, it should be promptly addressed, with due attention to managing associated health issues.
