What is Flumethrin?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Flumethrin

Flumethrin Spray is a ready-to-use antiparasitic treatment for external parasites in livestock and companion animals, including cows, horses, goats, sheep, dogs, and cats. It is one of the most highly effective options against ticks and mites but is less effective against insects like biting flies.

Flumethrin is classified as a synthetic pyrethroid ectoparasiticide. It works by affecting the nervous system of the parasite. It shows a broad spectrum of activity against external parasites like Rhipicephalus sanguineus and Haemaphysalis longicornis. This antiparasitic drug is effective against biting and nuisance flies, lice, and ticks on domestic livestock and companion animals. This particular drug of the pyrethroid group of ectoparasiticides is effective against mites and is used for treating psoroptic mange of sheep. Pyrethroids are synthesized chemicals based on the natural pyrethrin molecule. It is more stable and has higher potency against ectoparasites compared to pyrethrins.

This ectoparasitic drug interferes with sodium channels of the parasite nerve axons and results in delayed repolarization and paralysis of the ectoparasite. It belongs to the type II group of pyrethroids that function with the help of the Na+ channel and cause repetitive discharge. It shows its activity through peripheral and central neurons.

Insects communicate by transmitting electrical impulses through nerve cells through various physiological processes with the help of sodium ions. Pyrethroids bind to the sodium channels of the nerve cells, and are included in rapid nerve transmission. This leads to a delay in the closing of the channels and causes the continuous and uncontrolled flow of electrical impulses. This continuous electrical impulse exchange leads to hyperactivity and excitation of the parasitic nerve system. The overstimulation can lead to paralysis and death of the insect. This drug has a selective toxicity and is more toxic to insects than to mammals.

This drug should be prescribed and administered by a professional veterinary doctor.

Uses

What animals can be treated with Flumethrin Spray?

It's recommended for companion animals, like dogs and cats, and livestock animals, such as cows, horses, goats, and sheep.

How can Flumethrin Spray help animals?

Flumethrin is used in veterinary medicine to control various ectoparasites in livestock and companion animals (dogs). It is effective against ticks and it controls and prevents tick infestations including Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, Dermacentor variabilis, and Amblyomma americanum. It can also be useful in treating and repelling certain species of mites that lead to skin consequences and mange. Flumethrin shows effects against sucking and chewing lice that lead to irritation and discomfort in animals. It is effective in repelling flies that lead to spreading diseases. Preventing flies and insects is very helpful especially when there is an open wound that can be easily affected, but the spray should not be applied directly on the wound or near the wound because it can lead to side effects. Applying Flumethrin on clean skin can reduce the chances of wound inflammation. The ectoparasitic infestation is also related to the animal’s age and current health status.

Ticks carry many diseases, and when they get into close contact with livestock and companion animals, they can spread diseases and lead to serious consequences. Flumethrin spray is also a good preventative measure for ectoparasites.

How can Flumethrin Spray help in treating Psoroptic mange?

Psoroptic mange is caused by the mite Psoroptes ovishas and it is highly infectious. This disease leads to pruritis and large, scaly, and crusted lesions that develop in the wooly part of the sheep. The first visible signs are around the back and the side, but it can become a generalized infection and cover a large area of the body. If you notice any of these lesions, contact a veterinarian to check if this drug is suitable for the animals. Not-treated sheep with Psoroptic mange can develop secondary bacterial infections, wool loss, and scratching. It also leads to anemia and a high chances of bad outcomes. Usually, this ear mange is found around the head, neck, and body of the animal.

Applying Flumethrin Spray in cases of Psorptic mange can lead to improvements in clinical symptoms like head shaking, inflammation, alopecia, ear scratching, scaling, crusting, and irritation.

Why is Flumethrin Spray recommended in veterinary medicine?

There are over 650 species of ticks in human and veterinary medicine. These ticks are vectors of many diseases and have a major economic impact on the livestock industry worldwide. According to studies, even 1% Flumethrin can provide long-term protection of livestock against ticks. Animals with a high density of ticks should take higher dosages, while those with a low density of ticks can have twice the dosage. Even 1 % of pour on Flumethrin can lead to 95-100% lethality for ectoparasites. It can prevent disease transmission by ticks, fleas, mites, and other ectoparasites due to its repellent property. This ectoparasite can repel hard ticks of Hyalomma species and Rhipicephalus bursa from livestock for 2 months.

A combination with this ectoparasitic drug and other drugs can lead to increased lethal properties of the drug. Dogs with a collar and Flumethrin pour-on solution have a success rate of 94-100% repelling and lethal effects (Dermacentor variabilis and Amblyomma americanum ticks).

It is also recommended for endemic areas of leishmaniasis. According to a study, a combination of this antiparasitic with other antiparasitics can lead to 90.5-100% prevention of dog leishmaniasis. It has an antinutritional effect on Phlebotomus and reduced Leishmania infantum in young dogs. The ratio index of blood feeding by Phlebotomus in the dogs treated with Flumethrin pour-on was 12.26–25%, while in untreated animals, it goes up to 58.7%.
