What is Neomycin?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Neomycin

Neomycin Soluble Powder is an antibiotic used to treat certain infections in poultry and livestock like cows, sheep, goats, and pigs. It is indicated for the treatment of colibacillosis caused by E. coli and also improves mortality during E. coli infection in turkeys.

Neomycin sulfate belongs to the class of medicines known as aminoglycoside antibiotics. It works by inhibiting protein synthesis within the bacteria cell. Neomycin sulfate shows bactericidal action against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococci, E. coli, Haemophilus influenza, and many strains of Proteus and Pseudomonas.

Neomycin Soluble Powder is categorized as an aminoglycoside antibiotic, a type of medication that inhibits bacteria's ability to produce essential proteins necessary for their survival. It possesses a bactericidal effect, meaning it actively kills pathogens, particularly those that multiply rapidly, using various mechanisms. The antibiotic's primary action occurs at the bacterial ribosome, which is membrane-associated, disrupting the synthesis of proteins. The bactericidal effect is achieved with short contact with bacteria. Initially, the antibiotic disrupts the lipopolysaccharide via active cell transport. Its absorption from the gastrointestinal tract is minimal, accounting for less than 10%. Aminoglycosides exhibit heightened permeability in neonates and when enteritis is present.

It is poorly absorbed (less than 10%) from the gastrointestinal tract, with enhanced permeability in neonates and individuals with enteritis. Optimal absorption is achieved through intramuscular administration, reaching peak concentrations in the blood within 30-90 minutes. For safety reasons, it is recommended for once-per-day injections.

While its distribution in extracellular fluids is limited, except for the kidneys and inner ear, conditions like dehydration and sepsis can increase distribution. However, neomycin does not penetrate the cerebrospinal fluid, milk, ocular fluids, intestinal fluids, or prostatic secretions. The antibiotic is excreted unchanged through urine via glomerular filtration, typically occurring within 24 hours of administration. Elimination depends on factors such as cardiovascular function, age, fever, renal function, and other individual considerations.

It is important to note that Neomycin Soluble Powder is for veterinary purposes only.

This antibiotic is also available in combination with penicillin G procaine (suspension for injection).

Uses

What is Neomycin used for?

It's used to treat infections like bacterial pneumonia, enteritis, and colibacillosis.

What animals can be treated with Neomycin Soluble Powder?

This medicine is recommended for poultry, cows, goats, sheep, and pigs.

How is Neomycin Soluble Powder used?

This medicine has been manufactured as a water-soluble powder, which can be mixed into drinking water. Medicated water should be used immediately and disposed of after use.

How can Neomycin Soluble Powder help animals?

This antibiotic targets gram-negative organisms, including E. coli, Salmonella, Klebsiella, Enterobacter, Proteus, and Acinetobacter spp. Sometimes, the treatment should consist of a combination of other antimicrobials. This will allow the use of aminoglycosides in low doses.

How can Neomycin Soluble Powder help in bacterial pneumonia in animals?

Bacterial pneumonia is caused by Pasteurella multocida, Mannheimia haemolytica serotype 1, and Histophilus somni. This antibiotic can address the signs of the upper respiratory tract in animals. It can reduce serous or mucopurulent nasal discharge in animals. It can also reduce the signs of moist cough, especially in cattle. The respiratory rate can normalize and normal lung sounds can be detected in auscultation. After successful treatment, no bronchial sounds, crackles, or wheezes are noticed. The animals can get normal breathing patterns.

Successful treatment of bacterial pneumonia consists of applying proper antimicrobials with a broad spectrum. Aminoglycosides are usually first- or second-line treatment options for cattle, depending on the antibiogram results and the animal’s current health condition. Sometimes, other drugs are needed for a full recovery. Many veterinarians recommend NSAIDs to control bacterial pneumonia in animals.

How can Neomycin Soluble Powder help in treating enteritis in animals?

Neomycin Soluble Powder can reduce the signs of gastrointestinal infection. This includes alleviating signs of vomiting, diarrhea, or stomach upset. It is primarily effective in treating E. coli gastrointestinal infections, but this antibiotic has a broad spectrum and is effective against other bacteria as well. The drug of choice should depend on the antibiogram results. Animals with enteritis need supplementation with probiotics, vitamins, and minerals to normalize the gut flora.

Is only Neomycin Soluble Powder enough for treating diseases?

This depends on the animal’s current health condition. In cases of respiratory diseases, the exact cause must be known. The antibiogram can help in detecting whether this antibiotic is a good treatment choice. Some animals might need additional therapy with corticosteroids, IV fluids, or vitamin supplements.

In cases of gastrointestinal infections, this antibiotic can help in treating the bacteria since it has a wide spectrum. Animals need a proper and balanced diet to normalize their gut flora. Additionally, animals with gastrointestinal infections might benefit from supplements like probiotics and vitamins.

If the animal suffers from a urinary infection, the veterinarian should consider the usage of this antibiotic. The choice should be based on the antibiogram results.

Can Neomycin Soluble Powder help in treating mastitis?

Mastitis is a common and costly disease in cows, which decreases milk production. The most common cause of mastitis is Staphylococcus aureus. According to studies, 35%, 15% and 50% of the Staphylococcus aureus strains were respectively susceptible, moderately susceptible, and resistant to neomycin.

Can Neomycin be used in companion animals?

Yes, neomycin can be used for treating bacterial infections in companion animals as well. The form of the drug depends on the veterinarian’s choice and the manufacturer's recommendations. This aminoglycoside antibiotic is helpful in treating gastrointestinal and respiratory infections in dogs and cats.

How should Neomycin Soluble Powder be stored?

This medication should be stored in a dark, dry location under 30°C.

Is there a withdrawal period after treatment with Neomycin?

The withdrawal time is 0 days at lower doses and 1 day at higher dosages. The withdrawal period depends on the geolocation. Each country has its own withdrawal period. Check your country and state regulations before using this drug.

Dosage

How much Neomycin Soluble Powder should be given to livestock and poultry?

Dosage will vary based on illness, animal species, and environmental conditions.

Treatment should continue 1-2 days after the resolution of any symptoms.

If symptoms continue 2-3 days after treatment, consult a veterinarian.

Refer to a veterinary doctor or pharmacist for guidelines on dosage.

Side Effects

As with all pharmaceuticals, some unwanted effects can occur from the use of Neomycin Soluble Powder.

Side effects include but are not limited to fever, depression, and loss of appetite.

Serious side effects include allergy or hypersensitivity reactions.

Observe the animal after administering any new antibiotics. If you notice any adverse effects, contact a veterinarian as soon as possible.

Using this antibiotic can lead to the risk of vestibular and cochlear damage. Also, there are high chances of nephrotoxicity if the animal has a preexisting acoustic or vestibular impairment. Neomycin has a potential ototoxic effect in animals.

High plasma concentrations of aminoglycosides can lead to muscle weakness and respiratory arrest that leads to neuromuscular blockade. It has a potential risk of neuromuscular effects. It is due to the chelation of calcium and the competitive inhibition of the prejunctional release of acetylcholine.

Pregnant animals can experience negative side effects after consuming this antibiotic. The veterinarian should be notified about the animal’s current health status and condition.

For a comprehensive list of all possible side effects of this medication, consult a veterinarian.

Precautions
