What is Furazolidone?

Therapeutic Class:
Target Species:

Active Ingredients: Furazolidone

Furazolidone Tablets are an antibiotic drug used to prevent and treat bacterial and protozoan infections. It is effective against infections such as bacterial and protozoal enteritis and urinary tract infections, salmonellosis and E. coli infections in pigs, dogs, cats, calves, and poultry, and coccidiosis and giardiasis in birds and poultry.

Furazolidone is classified as a nitrofuran antibiotic. It works by interfering with the enzyme system of bacteria, but the mechanism of action against protozoa isn't well understood. This drug shows efficiency towards certain strains of Giardia, Vibrio cholerae, Trichomonas, Coccidia, and many strains of E. coli, Enterobacter, Campylobacter, Salmonella, and Shigella.

Nitrofurans inhibit several microbial enzyme systems involved in carbohydrate metabolism and block the initiation of translation, but their exact mechanism of action remains unclear.

They have a bacteriostatic effect, that becomes bactericidal at high doses. Nitrofurans demonstrate increased activity in acidic environments, with optimal effectiveness at a pH of 5.5. Resistant mutants are uncommon, and clinical resistance develops slowly. Nitrofurans have complete cross-resistance among themselves but do not show resistance to other antibacterial agents.

Due to their limited water solubility, nitrofurans are typically administered orally. They lack systemic effectiveness, either remaining unabsorbed from the gastrointestinal tract or being rapidly eliminated, achieving inhibitory concentrations primarily in the urine.

Since Furazolidone is a Nitrofuran antibiotic, its use in food animals is currently prohibited by the FDA under the Animal Medicinal Drug Use Clarification Act of 1994.

This drug can help in treating bloody diarrhea, prevent the further spreading of the disease, and can maintain the overall health of the animal.

Are only Furazolidone Tablets enough for treating amebic colitis?

The treatment of this protozoan disease should include antiprotozoal treatment and fluid therapy. It is recommended to be treated with Furazolidone (2-4mg/kg every 8 hours for 1 week). The treatment should also include metronidazole but the dog can continue shedding the trophozoites after the treatment. To treat severe colitis and diarrhea, IV fluid therapy is alsorecommended.

How can Furazolidone Tablets help in the treatment of coccidiasis?

This drug can reduce the incidence of diarrhea in animals and can prevent the further invasion of the parasite. The treatment should also include stress reduction, providing the animals with good-quality feeds and nonstressful environments. The infected animals should be moved to new areas and prevent overcrowding.

How can Furazolidine Tablets help in the treatment of Giardiasis?

Furazolidone can improve the stool of the animal. Giardiasis in dogs leads to foul-smelling diarrhea and this disease can lead to weight loss, chronic intermittent diarrhea, and fatty stool. A proper diet should also be included for animals that are infected with this disease. Patients should consume a highly digestible diet and all animals that were infected need to be re-tested 2-4 weeks after completion of treatment. The feces contains Giardia cysts and it should be immediately removed and disposed of. The infected animals also need to be bathed regularly to remove the cysts.

Can Furazolidone Tablets be used for treating viral infections?

No, Furazolidone should only be used for treating bacterial or protozoan infections. For treating viral infections, antiviral drugs, supplements, and vitamins need to be included.

Can Furazolidone Tablets be used for treating respiratory infections?

This medication should be mainly used for treating enteric infections and urinary tract infections. For successful treatment of respiratory infections, other drugs should be used that will lead to a more successful outcome.

What should be done if there are no improvements during the treatment?

The treatment is scheduled based on the current health condition of the animal and its age. If owners do not notice any improvement, it should be reported to a veterinarian. The animal should be re-examined and then it should be decided about the further treatment.

Can other drugs and supplements be given to the animals during the treatment with Furazolidone?

This should be discussed with a veterinarian prior to giving the drugs and supplements. Some drugs and supplements might interact with this medication and reduce its effectiveness.
